I've Never Been So Scared In My Life... |
Jun 28, 2009 - 10:33 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Morning all...
Well, I'm back from the hospital after dealing with what my new cardiologist (and new best friend) is calling an "undefined cardiac episode".
It all started last Friday afternoon. I was sitting at my desk at home trying to finish up some work before the weekend. I got up and in my house, my office is on the bottom floor of the house and I have to walk up three little steps to get to the kitchen area. I get to the top of the steps and all of the sudden I get a shooting pain across my chest. It was enough to make me stop right there and grab the center of my chest. Now I had been at the gym previously in the day and I had been lifting weights (chest exercises to be specific) so I thought maybe my chest muscles were reacting to that. Uh-No... about 2 minutes later the same type of pain hit again this time more intense and it damn near dropped me to the ground. Okay... something is wrong.
I sat down at the kitchen table to catch my breath. The pain subsided and I could breath normally again. Now as I said I had come from the gym earlier in the day and I had not showered yet so I head upstairs and take a shower and start to feel better. When I'm done I head back downstairs and sit at my desk and get back to work (I was working at home that day) and within 5 minutes of sitting at my desk my chest felt like one of my kids was standing on it (I have teenagers so you can imagine what that felt like).
Now being an ex-paramedic I know what that means. Right when the chest pain really kicked in my wife happened to walked into my office and I looked at her and she said "David... what's wrong?" I knew lying was not an option here but I also didn't want to... [Read More]

Windows 7 is about to arrive bringing with it World Peace. |
|
Jun 26, 2009 - 8:27 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Morning all...
Well, it's official. Microsoft has released a web page where you can now pre-order Windows 7 for what I feel is a very competitive price.
If you have not heard or read what the prices are, let me help you out.
Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for $49 or you can land Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for the pittance price of $99.
Now, you Windows XP users Microsoft has not left you out. You can also purchase the "upgrade" disk of Windows 7 however, you have to backup your system and then preform a full install of Windows 7 from scratch and you will be responsible for installing the drivers Windows 7 cannot find onto your system after the install. If you decide to go this route, make SURE you take a full inventory via Device Manager as to what is exactly installed. I also recommend before you attempt a fresh install you image your current drive and then head on out to the web and verify the drivers you are looking for are available for Windows 7 (some Vista drivers may also work... so keep that in mind) just in case all does not go according to plan.
Of course, if you don't have a Windows XP or Vista system you will have to pay retail price but as Microsoft has stated even the full, non-upgrade version of Windows 7 will be less than what they are charging for Vista. Why? Like I know why. It's Microsoft! I stopped trying to figure them out last week.
Anyway, what you may not know is the before mentioned upgrade price is only for a VERY limited time. Yep... you MUST get your order in no later than July 11th, 2009.
Here is the... [Read More]

Firefox 3.5 patch coming soon |
|
Jul 03, 2009 - 11:06 PM - by Digital Dave
|
Hmmm... okay. I can wait a little bit for this.
Mozilla Foundation notched up five million downloads in the first 24 hours after it released Firefox 3.5 earlier this week.
The open source browser maker also confirmed it would be bringing out version 3.5.1 soon to squash bugs its development team hadn’t managed to eradicate ahead of the launch.
Mozilla’s security patch is expected to rock up in the next few weeks. It will kill at least three bugs and “topcrashes” that remain present in the latest iteration of the popular Internet Explorer rival.
"[The] goal of this release should be a quick turnaround that fixes topcrashes and bugs we almost held ship for," said Mozilla earlier this week in its status meeting notes.

Windows 7 promises reduced power consumption |
|
Jul 03, 2009 - 1:15 PM - by Digital Dave
|
All I can say is I have confirmed this to be true.
Damn... they have done a great job on this OS.
By building more intelligence and tools into the operating system and working more closely with its hardware and software partners, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is promising significantly reduced power consumption when its Windows 7 OS debuts this fall.
The improvements in Windows 7 build on the significant strides around power management made in Windows Vista said Elliot Katz, Windows Client product manager for Microsoft Canada. It starts with making entering and exiting sleep mode more reliable, which along yielded sizable power savings.

Fantastic Deal - DiskTrix Buy One Get One Free |
|
Jul 03, 2009 - 1:01 PM - by Digital Dave
|
I wanted to mention this here since I happen to use this product myself on my XP laptop. I use the DefragExpress version of the software which is pretty much install, run and then forget about it until you need it again plus, it's dirt freaking cheap: $14.95 for two licenses.
Now Disktrix also offers a full blow, power user, highly configurable defrag software for tweakers out there called: Super Duper, Kick-Ass, Ultimate Degrag software package. Okay, so maybe not but that's what I call it.
Actually it's called: ULTIMATEDEFRAG and this weekend only you can get 2 licenses for just $29.95. Seriously, that's a hell of a deal.
Anyway here are the links to the deals:

Ya know what... that's not a bad idea.
Microsoft appears likely to offer a "Family Pack" version of Windows 7, according to language in a leaked test version of the operating system.
This week enthusiasts started buzzing over wording in the license agreement in the test build that suggests Microsoft will have an option to buy a license for Windows 7 that covers up to three PCs in the same household.

Some Vista users say they're getting the Ultimate shaft |
|
Jul 02, 2009 - 8:02 PM - by Digital Dave
|
Hmmmm... I get why they would be a little pissed.
Microsoft promised that by purchasing the pricey Ultimate edition of Vista users would get all kinds of extras.
However, for many, those extras turned out to be little more than a few screensavers and a poker game, prompting some significant grousing.
Now, that frustration has turned to anger after Microsoft offered its pre-order program for Windows 7. Through July 11, Microsoft is offering a steep discount for those moving to cheaper versions of Windows 7, but nothing for those who want to stay on Ultimate. Under the terms of Microsoft's discount pre-order program, users can buy an upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional at roughly half the list price, but the Ultimate version is offered at the full $219 price.

Unstoppable Copier 4.1 |
|
Jul 02, 2009 - 10:42 AM - by Digital Dave
|
One of those utilities that when you need it, you go... "what the hell was the name of that copying utility again?"
This program is great for recovering files from scratched CD's or defective floppy/hard disks. Normally when your computer is unable to copy a file from a damaged disk it will abort and delete the portition of the file it has copied. This program however will continue to copy the file right to the end. Any data that is not recoverable after many retries is replaced with blanks. This will allow you to truely recover every byte of information that is available for recovery. The program allows you to specify a single file, a group using wildcards (* and ?) or if you wish, select a starting folder and the program will copy all data from it and any sub folders it may contain. This program doesnt just need to be used for copying files form defective disks, it can be used to transfer any files!

Time to upgrade.
Microsoft on Wednesday started the expiration process for the beta version of its Windows 7 operating system.
Beginning today, users that are still running the trial version of the company's next OS will see it shut down every two hours.
The interruptions are designed to encourage early adopters to move to Windows 7 Release Candidate, a more polished preview version of Vista's successor.

4.7 million Firefox 3.5 downloads ... and counting! |
|
Jul 01, 2009 - 11:28 AM - by Digital Dave
|
Now that's a lot of flippen downloads.
It’s not been 24 hours yet, and Mozilla’s Firefox 3.5 web browser has been downloaded over 4.7 million times.
You can keep an eye on the download stats here.
It doesn’t look like Mozilla will beat the world record set back when it released Firefox 3.0, where there were 8 million downloads in 24 hours.
I’ve been running Firefox 3.5 for a few hours now and have a few thoughts:
* Page loading times are fast, noticeably faster than IE8.
* However, firing up the browser is painfully slow, even with no add-ons.
* Private mode works well, but it’s nothing new, and an example of Mozilla playing catch-up.

Windows 7 Pre-Orders ROCK Amazon Sales Charts |
|
Jun 29, 2009 - 7:55 AM - by Digital Dave
|
MS has a hit on it's hands I guarantee it.
Amazon must have had one of their busiest weeks ever. Not only have they virtually sold out of every Michael Jackson album, but the Windows 7 Pre-orders have shot to the top of the bestsellers charts. Orders for other Windows 7 editions are also doing well.
Since Friday, users from the United States, Canada and Japan have been able to pre-order Windows 7. Users from Great Britain, France and Germany will have to wait until mid July before they can start pre-ordering the operating system. Interested users from the three countries can currently purchase Windows 7 Home Premium for $49.99 instead of $119.99 and Windows 7 Professional for $99.99 instead of $199.99.

MS To Investigate Recent "Push" Update Issue. |
|
Jun 29, 2009 - 7:52 AM - by Digital Dave
|
This is still causing controversy. You think they would have fixed this by now.
We were recently reporting that with the June 2009 Patch Tuesday, some updates were pushed to Windows users regardless of the fact that they had selected the option to be informed about available updates and thus had to approve any and all updates before being downloaded and installed. It seems that the issue has not gone unnoticed by the Redmond-based software developer and the Windows Update Product Team in particular.
“There have been some recent questions about how users are notified about updates and comments that sometimes customers aren’t being notified that updates are available when they shut down their computer. We are investigating the reports and trying to clarify with the community exactly what people are experiencing. Please call Microsoft... [Read More]
